Adelheid Byttebier

[img_assist|nid=84|title=|desc=|link=node|align=left|width=200|height=313]Being elected in 2004 as member of the Brussels regional parliament, she represents the Green party "Groen!". Adelheid Byttebier has also been minister of social affairs, health and equal chances in the Flemish government (2003-2004). Before she got into politics in 1993, she was for 10 years active at Euro level in environmental and social organisations; being amongst others chairperson of YEE (Youth and Environment Europe) and general coordinator of CC-EYE (Coordination commission of European youth exchange), organising training for intercultural learning.

Europe’s capital city is where Adelheid has been living ever since she left behind her hometown in West Flanders to study sociology. She was dazzled by the city’s cultural diversity. She felt honoured to live in a city with such enormous potential. A city where change is needed. This is what drove Adelheid to politics.

As a politician Adelheid has a particular concern for the development of precarious quarters like Helmet (Schaarbeek), where she lives. Those typical Brussels areas have a lot of assets (youngsters, shops, lively atmosphere) but fight against poverty, unemployment and poor investments. Yet they are the guaranty for a social and prospering Brussels. [img_assist|nid=96|title=|desc=|link=node|align=right|width=130|height=195]

Although with an education of social worker and master in sociology (at Brussels University VUB), Adelheid Byttebier has a special interest in environmental issues, nature conservation and traffic and pollution related issues.

Whereas the Brussels capital and its inhabitants demand all of her attention, leisure time is preferable spent in green surroundings. Adelheid Byttebier is married and has three children (Ruben °1991, Mathilde °1993 and Walter °1996). She loves singing.
